Helpful Tips & Facts
What is Screen Printing?
Screen printing is the process of pressing ink through a stenciled mesh screen leaving the imprinted design onto a garment. This process is repeated for each color in the artwork that is being printed onto the garment. That is because screen printing requires one mesh screen for every color that needs to be printed. The set-up time for a job can vary depending on the amount of screens being used which is why a lot of shops tend to have a minimum requirement. The process of screen printing is lengthy but the more items in the run, the more cost-effective it is. This is typically seen in many retail stores that sell graphic tees as they all would have been printing at the same time making them profitable to sell.
What is embroidery?
Embroidery is the process of embellishing the surface of any garment with thread. The thread is often made of silk or cotton but there can be specialty threads if needed. Unlike screen printing, embroidery can have as many or as few colors as it needs because the amount of thread needed to stitch out the logo is what defines the cost. Every machine has a different amount of threads it can hold which adds to how colorful a design can be. You need a digitized file to embroider anything which can be hard for some to obtain. Luckily many shops that do embroidery offer those services for you.
How is screen printing priced?
Screen printing is priced based on the amount of colors in your artwork as each one requires a mesh screen, the clothing cost if you do not provide it yourself, and the cost of set-up. There are usually minimums for printing and a shop will rarely screenprint anything under 12 items.
How is embroidery priced?
Embroidery is often priced based on the number of stitches. Typically every 1K stitches will warrant a certain amount such as $0.85 per 1K stitches but that can change based on quantity. There are price breaks on higher quantity orders. You need a digitized file to have something embroidered and a shop will often charge you a digitizing fee if you do not have a DST or EMB file for them to use.
